Odorant Neutralizer System – Massachusetts

Location
Massachusetts, USA
Application
Pipeline Blowdown Odor Mitigation
Welker Products

A natural gas transmission operator required an automated odor mitigation system to reduce mercaptan odors generated during pipeline blowdowns and maintenance activities. With multiple vent stacks located throughout the facility, the customer needed a centralized solution capable of providing consistent odor control while minimizing manual intervention and operational complexity.

The system needed to automatically activate during venting events, provide visibility into neutralizer inventory levels, and withstand the demanding conditions commonly found in natural gas facilities.

Welker engineered and manufactured a custom Odorant Neutralizer System (ONS) that utilizes pipeline gas pressure, automated controls, and proprietary odor neutralization technology to help reduce odor emissions during blowdowns. The fully integrated system provides reliable operation, simplified maintenance, and improved odor management, helping the operator minimize the impact of venting activities on nearby communities.

The Challenge

A natural gas transmission and distribution operator was experiencing recurring odor complaints from a nearby community whenever routine pipeline blowdown events were performed. Although the releases were a normal part of system maintenance and operations, the odorized natural gas vented during these events often led residents to believe a gas leak was occurring, resulting in customer complaints, concern from the public, and additional time spent by personnel responding to inquiries.

The operator sought a solution that could significantly reduce the odor impact of blowdowns without disrupting operations. They partnered with Welker to develop and implement a practical, field-proven odor mitigation system capable of addressing community concerns while supporting safe and efficient maintenance activities.

The Welker Solution

Welker engineered and manufactured a custom Odorant Neutralizer System (ONS) designed to automatically neutralize mercaptan odors during pipeline blowdowns.

The system utilizes existing pipeline gas pressure to atomize and distribute a proprietary neutralizing agent through strategically positioned spray nozzles mounted around each vent stack. As natural gas is vented, the neutralizer is injected into the gas stream, helping reduce detectable odor before it leaves the facility.

By automating activation based on blowdown pressure, the system eliminates manual intervention and ensures odor mitigation begins precisely when venting occurs.

The result is a safer, more efficient blowdown process that helps operators maintain positive community relations while supporting regulatory and operational objectives.

ONS System Inside

The Welker System

The installed Welker Odorant Neutralizer System consisted of a centralized neutralizer supply package paired with dedicated vent stack nozzle assemblies.

The main system included:

  • 75-gallon OdorXice™ neutralizer storage tank
  • Automated touchscreen controller
  • Pressure-responsive activation controls
  • Welker F-31™ Filter Dryer
  • Flag Tracker with magnetostrictive level transmitter
  • Multi-stage gas regulation system
  • System status and alarm indication lights
  • Vent stack spray nozzle assemblies
  • Skid-mounted enclosure designed for outdoor installation

The system was engineered to support multiple vent stack locations from a single neutralizer supply package, reducing equipment duplication and simplifying long-term operation and maintenance.

Key Welker Components

Welker F-31™ Filter Dryer
The F-31 Filter Dryer conditions the gas supply by removing contaminants and moisture that could impact downstream performance. This helps improve system reliability and reduce maintenance requirements.
Flag Tracker with Magnetostrictive Level Transmitter
Continuous level monitoring allows operators to track neutralizer inventory in real time, helping ensure the system remains ready for future blowdown events and reducing the risk of unexpected downtime.
Touchscreen Controller

A user-friendly touchscreen interface provides operators with system status, alarm monitoring, and operational visibility, simplifying training and ongoing operation.

Vent Stack Nozzle Assemblies

Dedicated nozzle assemblies mounted around each vent stack provide uniform distribution of the neutralizing agent, ensuring effective mixing with the vented gas stream for improved odor suppression performance.

Welker OdorXice™ Plus

Welker OdorXice™ Plus is specifically formulated to neutralize mercaptan odors generated during natural gas blowdowns, helping operators reduce nuisance odors and maintain positive relationships with surrounding communities.

Results

The Welker Odorant Neutralizer System provided the operator with an automated and repeatable approach to odor mitigation during natural gas blowdown operations.

By integrating pressure-responsive activation, engineered vent stack spray distribution, and Welker’s proprietary neutralization technology, the system helped:

  • Reduce mercaptan odor emissions during blowdowns
  • Minimize public complaints and concerns
  • Improve operational efficiency through automation
  • Enhance operator visibility with real-time monitoring
  • Support multiple vent stacks from a centralized platform
  • Reduce maintenance through robust filtration and system design

Since the ONS was installed, the customer has reported zero complaints related to blowdown odors, demonstrating the system’s effectiveness in mitigating odor emissions and improving community satisfaction.
