Odorant Neutralizer System

The Welker Odorant Neutralizer System (ONS) automatically neutralizes mercaptan odors during natural gas pipeline blowdowns and venting operations—helping operators reduce odor complaints, false emergency reports, and community concern.

The Challenge

Necessary Blowdowns. Unnecessary Complaints.

Pipeline blowdowns are a routine part of maintenance, emergency shutdowns, and commissioning. But when odorized gas is vented at a rapid pace, the mercaptan smell can travel well beyond the facility fence line—often leading nearby residents to assume there is a gas leak. For transmission pipelines, compressor stations, and gate stations located near homes, schools, and businesses, a single blowdown can trigger a wave of calls to the utility and local emergency responders. Until now, operators have had few options to control it.

The Welker ONS was developed in response to repeated operator requests for a practical way to control blowdown odors—a solution we pride ourselves on innovating.

ONS System Inside
How It Works

Odor Neutralization in Four Steps

The ONS uses the pipeline’s own gas pressure to deliver the neutralizer exactly when and where it’s needed—no pumps and no operator intervention required.

01

Blowdown Detected

When blowdown pressure is detected, the system automatically initiates the neutralization sequence.

02

Gas Conditioned

Supply gas passes through a Welker F-31™ Filter Dryer to remove contaminants and moisture before reaching downstream components.

03

Neutralizer Atomized

Pipeline gas pressure pushes OdorXice™ Plus from the supply tank and atomizes it through engineered spray nozzles.

04

Odor Neutralized

Nozzles positioned around the vent stack circumference mix neutralizer with the venting gas, minimizing odor before it disperses.

Built for the Field

Every Detail Engineered for Reliable Odor Control

Pressure-Responsive Activation

Automatically starts neutralization when blowdown pressure is detected, reducing operator workload and ensuring odor control begins when it’s needed.

Spray Nozzle Distribution

Uniform coverage around the vent stack for more effective mixing of neutralizer and gas, maximizing odor suppression.

Touchscreen Controller

An intuitive interface for monitoring system status, alarms, and operating conditions—simplifying operation and training.

Welker F-31™ Filter Dryer

Automatically starts neutralization when blowdown pressure is detected, reducing operator workload and ensuring odor control begins when it’s needed.

Flag Tracker Level Monitoring

A magnetostrictive level transmitter delivers real-time neutralizer level, helping operators plan refills and avoid unexpected downtime.

Status Indicator Lights

External lights show at a glance whether the system is ready, in operation, or requires attention.

Multi-Stack Capability

Supply multiple vent-stack panels from a single neutralizer system, reducing equipment duplication and installation cost.

Two-Stage Gas Regulation

Stable, controlled pressure to the spray system across varying conditions for consistent spray and neutralizer performance.

Welker Made™

Designed, manufactured, and tested by Welker in Sugar Land, Texas, with single-source accountability from design through commissioning.

The Neutralizer

Powered by OdorXice™ Plus

The ONS is designed around Welker OdorXice™ Plus, a neutralizer formulated to break down mercaptans and other organosulfur compounds. Already trusted by operators for decommissioning, line clean-out, and spill response, OdorXice™ Plus now goes to work directly in the vent stream during blowdowns.

Non-Toxic Non-Hazardous Non-Corrosive Biodegradable

Applications

Ideal Where Odor Control Matters Most

The ONS is best suited for facilities located near residential or public areas, where blowdown odors are most likely to reach the community.

Transmission Pipelines

Planned maintenance and emergency blowdowns on mainline segments.

Compressor Stations

Station blowdowns during maintenance and emergency shutdowns.

City Gate Stations

Venting events at facilities close to populated areas.

Maintenance & Commissioning

Scheduled depressurization for repairs, tie-ins, and system upgrades.

Emergency Shutdowns

Rapid depressurization when a line must be taken down quickly.

Facilities Near Communities

Any vent location where odor complaints are a concern.

Configured Around Your Facility

No two blowdown sites are the same. Every ONS is engineered to your vent stack configuration, expected blowdown frequency, and site conditions.

Tank Capacity

Sized to your expected number of blowdowns per year

Vent Stacks

Single stack or multiple stacks from one supply

Installation

Skid, enclosure, or building-mounted packages
