Understanding Transport Canada

What Is a Transport Canada Certificate?

Transport Canada issues certificates (SU numbers) that let dangerous goods be transported in containers that vary from the standard regulations, subject to conditions that provide an equivalent level of safety.

Federal Oversight

Transport Canada is the federal department responsible for transportation policies, programs, and the safety of all modes of transport in Canada.

TDG Act & Regulations

The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act governs how hazardous materials like crude oil, gasoline, and hydrocarbon samples move across Canada.

Equivalent Level of Safety

Each certificate sets the design, construction, and use conditions a container must meet. The SU number identifies the certificate, and renewals extend its expiry date.
